Puducherry (Tamil: புதுச்சேரி / புதுவை) is a Union Territory of India. It is a former French colony, consisting of four non-contiguous enclaves, or districts, and named for the largest, Puducherry. In September 2006, the territory changed its official name from Pondicherry to the vernacular original, Puducherry, which means "new village" in the Tamil language.

Rue Dumas. Pondicherry
A rickshaw driver taking a rest on Rue Dumas in beautiful Pondicherry
Pierre Benoît Dumas (1668 - 1745) was the French Governor General for Pondichéry and Réunion. Predecessor of La Bourdonnais on the Isles and Dupleix in the Indies, Dumas hailed from Southern France. There is still a street in Pondicherry named after him.
